Treatments

MLS laser therapy.

Two synchronised wavelengths of infrared light delivered through the skin to reduce pain and inflammation and support tissue healing. Nothing is injected and nothing is cut, which makes it a reasonable thing to try for the right problems before anything more invasive.

What it is

MLS laser therapy is a painless, non-invasive treatment that uses two synchronised wavelengths of infrared light — a continuous 808 nm wavelength and a pulsed 905 nm wavelength. Delivering them together, rather than one after the other, is what the system is built to do, and it is where the name comes from: Multiwave Locked System.

The light is absorbed by tissue below the skin, where it acts on local circulation and cell metabolism. What patients notice is less pain, less swelling and better movement in the treated area, with healing supported over a course of visits rather than in one sitting. The device is FDA-cleared and, although it is a Class 4 laser, treatment itself is painless — most people feel nothing beyond a mild warmth.

Sessions are done in the office by passing the handpiece over the area. No needle, no anaesthetic, no recovery period — you drive yourself home and carry on with your day.

Good candidates

What we use it for

  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Arthritis and other degenerative joint pain
  • Swelling
  • Recovery after surgery
  • Problems that have not responded well to other conservative treatment

How it works

What a course of laser looks like.

  1. 01

    Diagnosis first

Laser is a treatment, not an answer. We establish what is producing your pain before starting a course, because that is what determines whether laser is the right tool for it — or whether something else should come first.

  2. 02

    Six to twelve sessions

Most people complete a course of six to twelve sessions. Recent problems tend to need fewer; long-standing ones more. We set an expected number at the outset and reassess against it rather than extending indefinitely.

  3. 03

Two to three times a week

Sessions are scheduled two to three times per week, so a course usually runs over a few weeks. The spacing is part of how it works and matters more than people expect.

  4. 04

Five to fifteen minutes a visit

Each visit takes about five to fifteen minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. There is no downtime afterwards.

Common questions

Does it hurt?
No. It is painless. Most people feel a gentle warmth over the area during the session and nothing at all afterwards.
How is this different from SoftWave therapy?
Both are non-invasive, both are done here in the office, and neither involves a needle — but the mechanism is different. Shockwave delivers mechanical acoustic pressure into a chronically painful tendon; the laser delivers light energy that acts on pain, inflammation and swelling. They suit different problems, and Dr. Loch will tell you which one fits yours, or whether neither does. See SoftWave therapy.
Can I have it alongside my other treatment?
Yes. Laser is usually part of a plan rather than a replacement for one. It is commonly used alongside physical therapy, after a procedure, or during recovery from surgery.
How soon will I notice a difference?
Some people notice a change within the first few sessions, but the course is designed to work cumulatively. Judge it across the whole course rather than after the first visit.
Is there anyone who should not have it?
There are a small number of situations where laser is not appropriate. Dr. Loch will go through your history and check before a course is started — that is part of the assessment visit.
Is it covered by insurance?
Usually not — laser therapy is generally self-pay, as shockwave is. You will be given the cost of a course before anything is scheduled.
